Sermon in a nutshell: Matthew 5:27-37
Happy and healthy family matters. Love grows there. Happy and healthy children grow there. God is glorified there. The question is this: How can we make a happy and healthy family at home and at church? Jesus teaches us how to make it in today’s Bible passage-through humility and grace!
These statements make me extremely humble.
1) Everyone who looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
2) If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away.
3) If your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away.
Now, I am a man without eyes and hands. I am glad that it is just me and you still have hands and eyes!
The message is clear: Do not boast on your righteousness! (if you want to grow love here)
We tend to feel that we are more righteous than others when we do a few good things. It makes us arrogant and destroys our relationship with others. If it happens in our marriage and among family we would have miserable life, a hellish life on earth! When we admit that we are sinners, we are starting building happy and healthy families at home and at church.
Jesus has made all of us feel truly humble! Now we know that we are not better than anybody else. We are also saved by Grace! In this context, Jesus said to all men, “Do not think that you have natural rights to divorce your wives just because you are men!” Back then, men had all the rights to divorce their wives without any particular reason. They could just give women certificates of divorce! Then the women were left without any resources! So, Jesus was protecting women from the abuse of the male privilege by saying, “Do not divorce your wife unless she had an affair!”
Even when she has an affair, remember what Jesus said a minute ago: “Everyone who looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart!” Now would you forgive her and embrace her as a fellow sinner or not?
Jesus says that we are not able to keep our vows. We try to keep them. So, we can only say “yes, yes” or “no, no” but anything more than that comes from the evil one.
The message is again clear: Even when we keep our vows, it is not our virtue but God’s Grace that works. Have you had happy and healthy marriage? I am celebrating with you that you have had wonderful life together. However, remember my brothers and sisters, it has been possible only through God’s grace. So, let us not judge others when they could not keep their vows. Happy and healthy marriage matters only when we give glory and credit to God alone! Love grows there.
- When did you feel that you were better than people around you including your spouse? What did make you realize that it was your arrogance?
- What did make you feel that it was God’s grace that you have happy and healthy marriage?
