Who are happy?
The Psalms 1-2 says, “Happy are those who do not follow the advice of the wicked, or take the path that sinners tread, or sit in the seat of scoffers; but their delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law they meditate day and night.”
There are three things that they do not do and two things that they do.
First they do not follow the advice of the wicked. Because they love the law of the Lord and meditate it day and night, they have wisdom to tell what is good for them. When they hear the advice of the wicked they know right away that the advice would ruin their lives. They can tell that such advice would lead to the destruction of their lives. So they do not follow such ideas suggested by the wicked.
One example would be the story of Joseph in the Bible. He was seduced by the wife of Potiphar, the general of Egypt. However, he did not fall over to the temptation. He said to her, I would not sin against God! If Joseph followed the advice of the wicked, his life must be ruined and ended there in Egypt.
Secondly, they do not take the path that sinners tread. This second step follows the first step of taking advice from the wicked. Our thoughts lead our actions. When we refuse to take evil thoughts we can avoid evil behaviors. Evil seeds are growing in our brains. We cannot avoid those evil thoughts passing by but we can prevent them to find nest in our thoughts. That is the only way to prevent evil actions.
Lastly, they do not sit in the seat of scoffers. Scoffers laugh at the faith in God. They say that there is no God and it is foolish for anyone to follow God’s ways. They trust their own wisdom and power. They enjoy what they have now. However, if we read the Bible day and night, we know that we are mere creatures. We know that there is God whose love and wisdom is bigger than us. We humbly seek for His Grace. We love to have fellowship with God. We want to hear His voice all the time. That is why we meditate the law of the Lord day and night.
The blessings of those who meditate on the law of the Lord are threefold. First they yield their fruits in its season. When they are young they are loved by their parents. When they are growing they are loved by their friends. When they are getting older they are loved by their children. When they are dying they are loved by the ones who were helped by them. All seasons of life have their unique fruits.
Secondly, their leaves do not wither. Leaves are the entrance point of sunlight. Leaves are production place of the nutrition for the tree. When leaves do not wither, they can receive grace from God and continuously provide nutrition for the soul. Also leaves can be good herbal medicine for the sick. They can help not only themselves but also many others through the words of wisdom and act of love.
So, in all that they do, they prosper. Prosperity and success is the by-product of their fellowship with God. When we enjoy the fellowship with God, we already have success and prosperity in our lives! They are the happy ones!
