Psalm 16

Psalm 16

Who can cover me?

If we watch action movie, we can see cops who cover for each other. During the shooting, one cop runs to go to a target and other cops cover for the runner. In our real life, we also need somebody who can cover us in crisis or difficult situations. Who can cover me all the time spiritually, financially, and physically?

The psalmist asks God to cover him. “Protect me, O God, for in you I take refuge.” He continues, “I say to the Lord, ‘You are my Lord; I have no good apart from you.’”

Sometimes, fellow believers can cover us. The psalmist also puts his trust in them because they share the same faith in God. However, he does not trust those who seek protection from false idols. “As for the holy ones in the land, they are the noble, in whom is all my delight.” Those who choose another god multiply their sorrows; their drink offerings of blood I will not pour out or take their names upon my lips.”

When God covers us, we are fine in any situation. Even when we fall, we will fall onto a safe ground. “The Lord is my chosen portion and my cup; you hold my lot. The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; I have a goodly heritage.”

When God covers us, we know what to do and what to say in any situation. We can keep confidence and joy out of it. “I bless the Lord who gives me counsel; in the night also my heart instructs me. I keep the Lord always before me; because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved.”

Not only spiritually but also physically we can enjoy healthy life: “Therefore my heart is glad, and my soul rejoices; my body also rests secure. For you do not give me up to Sheol, or let your faithful one see the Pit.”

In conclusion, the psalmist praises God for the joy that he now enjoys: “You show me the path of life. In your presence there is fullness of joy; in your right hand are pleasures forevermore.”

Can we make the same confession?
