Sermon in a nutshell: “God is with us!” (Acts 27:1-23)

Biggest Loser? Biggest Giver!

Our mission committee is launching a fun mission project called, “Biggest Loser? Biggest Giver!”  It works like this:

1st step: You pay a registration fee ($30) at the church by Feb. 8.

2nd step: You weigh in at the weighing station on Feb. 9 (Valentine Dance Sunday)

3rd step: You weigh in again at the weighing station on Mar. 22 (Saturday)

4th step: A judge will announce the winner based on the percentage of weight lost. For example, John (200lbs) loses 8 lbs (4%) and Sue (100lbs) loses 5 lbs (5%). Even though John has lost 3 more pounds, Sue wins percentagewise.

If you are the winner, you will get half of the money as a prize and half will go to the mission (“Imagine No Malaria Now”). So, if 20 people register, the winner will get $300 dollars and we will donate $300 to “Imagine No Malaria Now”. This fun mission project is open to everybody.  Church members as well as non-church members can register and win the prize. Every Sunday we will announce the possible prize amount as more people register.

Benefit for me and benefit for others!

Why are we doing this?  Because the Bible tells us that God is with us to save others. In today’s scripture, God told Paul, “Do not be afraid, Paul; you must stand before the emperor; and indeed, God has granted safety to all those who are sailing with you.”(Acts 27:23) God was with Paul and saved his life so that he could share the Good News in Rome. For that purpose, God saved the lives of others in the ship that was used to transport Paul. Paul had God’s favor but other people benefited as well. Many of us have made a New Year’s resolution to lose weight but by now, our resolution has become history. We want to renew our resolution and we will save lives in Africa.

Children in Africa die every minute! We can save them while we lose weight.

Literally, one child in Africa dies every minute because of malaria! Before our campaign (“Nothing But Net”), one child died every 30 seconds. We slowed down the speed. However, we did not stop the death train. We want to stop it by 2015. Our conference decided to work with the UN, WHO, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and UMCOR to eliminate malaria from Africa. That is why we launched the campaign, “Imagine No Malaria Now”! Parents only name their children 5 years after birth because then the children have a chance to survive.  God helps us to stay healthy so that we can save others spiritually and literally.

Would you be the biggest giver?

Our goal is not to be the biggest loser. The TV program can promote that. Our goal is to be the biggest giver.  The apostle Paul was not interested in being alive. He was more interested in giving eternal life to the people in Rome. For that purpose, he risked his life. For that purpose, God, also, saved the lives of the sailors. When we start something small, God gives us something bigger than we expect.  Let us have fun for ourselves and save lives in another continent in a fun way.

  2. To whom are you going to suggest registering for this mission project?
