What do you want to do when you become a king?
Many times, we dream about being a king or a queen. We dream about being in control of our lives and our situations. We want to be a king or a queen because we want to do whatever we want. We do not like to be told NO!
However, that is not the image of a biblical king! In the Bible, a king should voluntarily obey to the commandments of God and become a model for other people. If you are an ordinary citizen, you may be able to do something that you desire to do. However, if you are a king, you have to refrain from doing many things that you desire. You have more responsibilities and obligations!
A Sovereign’s Pledge of Integrity and Justice
That is why this Psalm 101 sounds like Basic Ethics 101. “I will sing of loyalty and of justice; to you, O Lord, I will sing. I will study the way that is blameless. When shall I attain it? I will walk with integrity of heart within my house; I will not set before my eyes anything that is base.”
It is not just personal ethics but a communal justice that a king should keep.
The king also has responsibility that the whole community respects the commandments of God. He has power to enforce the laws. Sometimes, it is not easy for a tender heart human being. However, as a king, he should do it whether he likes the job or not.
“I hate the work of those who fall away; it shall not cling to me. Perverseness of heart shall be far from me; I will know nothing of evil. One who secretly slanders a neighbor I will destroy. A haughty look and an arrogant heart I will not tolerate. I will look with favor on the faithful in the land, so that they may live with me; whoever walks in the way that is blameless shall minister to me. No one who practices deceit shall remain in my house; no one who utters lies shall continue in my presence. Morning by morning I will destroy all the wicked in the land, cutting off all evildoers from the city of the Lord.”
