Psalm 141

Psalm 141

Sometimes avoiding evil is good enough

In our lives, we want to do good works. We want to leave legacy to the next generation. We want to contribute to the society. However, sometimes avoiding evil is already a heavy duty. If we just refrain from doing evil, we succeed in our daily lives. It is hard enough for us to escape from the snares of wicked thoughts and deeds. That is why our Lord taught us to pray, saying, “Lead us not into temptation and deliver us from evil.”

“I call upon you, O Lord; come quickly to me; give ear to my voice when I call to you. Let my prayer be counted as incense before you, and the lifting up of my hands as an evening sacrifice. Set a guard over my mouth, O Lord; keep watch over the door of my lips. Do not turn my heart to any evil, to busy myself with wicked deeds in company with those who work iniquity; do not let me eat of their delicacies.

Sometimes we need to be corrected by the righteous

Avoiding evil is not easy. That is why we need supporters and colleagues. Buddy system works here also. When we are in a small group of righteous people, we have support and get more strength. We have to pray for such strong support in times of crisis.

“Let the righteous strike me; let the faithful correct me. Never let the oil of the wicked anoint my head,    for my prayer is continually against their wicked deeds. When they are given over to those who shall condemn them, then they shall learn that my words were pleasant. Like a rock that one breaks apart and shatters on the land, so shall their bones be strewn at the mouth of Sheol.

Eventually we need to focus on God who knows our inner thoughts!

We cannot do it alone. Our partners cannot help us sometimes. Eventually we need to focus on God. When we fix our attention on God, we can overcome any temptation and evil thoughts. In deep prayer, we do not have any more requests. We just want to be with God. That is the ultimate way to escape from evil!

“But my eyes are turned toward you, O God, my Lord; in you I seek refuge; do not leave me defenseless. Keep me from the trap that they have laid for me, and from the snares of evildoers. Let the wicked fall into their own nets, while I alone escape.”
