Sermon in a nutshell: “Save yourself from this corrupt generation” (Acts 2:21-40)

Sermon in a nutshell: “Save yourself from this corrupt generation” (Acts 2:21-40)
What does the Holy Spirit do? I have already talked about two things that the Holy Spirit does: (1) The Holy Spirit translates God’s love into human language; (2) The Holy Spirit connects all the dots to complete the big picture for us to see and understand God’s love.
For example, last Sunday we heard reports from Piper and Victoria, two of our high school girls. They had such life changing experiences. They could see new things and understand what our churches and UMW have done in the name of Jesus. They were filled with the Spirit. They could connect the dots and saw the big picture that God had been drawing for the all humanity!
That was what happened to Peter. Do you remember what Peter did? When people recognized him and asked him whether he belonged to Jesus, he strongly denied Jesus and ran away! However, now look at him! He was standing in front of the crowd and courageously witnessed to the risen Jesus. He understood the Scripture and connected the passages in the Old Testament to the event that he witnessed! This is what the Holy Spirit is doing!
Without the Holy Spirit, we cannot understand how the King David who lived long before the times of Jesus could see Jesus at the right side of God, saying, “The Lord (God) said to my Lord (Jesus): Sit at my right hand until I (God) make your enemies (Satan and its followers) a footstool for your (Jesus’) feet.” The King David saw Jesus already and knew what would happen in history! Furthermore, Peter understood what the King David said! After Jesus was risen and lifted up into heaven, Peter could picture Jesus sitting at the right hand of God! So, by the power of the Holy Spirit Peter could interpret all the historical events and the Old Testament passages in the light of the resurrection of Jesus. Then Peter proclaimed that Jesus fulfilled the promises of God and now Jesus is the Lord and Messiah!
(3) The third thing that the Holy Spirit does is to make people repent: “When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, ‘Brothers, what shall we do?” Peter replied, ‘Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins.
When we finally see the big picture, we realize our position in it. God is the Creator and Jesus is the Savior. We are the sinners! The Holy Spirit helps us to realize that painful fact and leads us to accept the salvation that is offered freely to us by the grace of God. (4) The Holy Spirit then gives us the desire to be a part of God’s family. The Holy Spirit gives us the longing to be a part of God’s movement in this world.
Now, I ask you! Have you received the Holy Spirit? Have you understood God’s love and God’s purpose in your life? Have you confessed and repented your sins? Do you want to live a holy life according to God’s word? Then come forward. We will accept you as a member of God’s family.
1. When did you feel God’s forgiveness in your life?
2. When did you join to God’s family? And to our church?
