Psalm 11

Psalm 11

The strongest defense plan

When people attack me with false accusations, I have some options. First, I can strike back. Second, I can ignore. Third, I can prove my innocence. All these are available options. However, the Bible advices me to trust God and take refuge in the LORD!

The psalmist says, “In the Lord I take refuge.” Her reasoning is like this: If I flee somewhere else, they will catch me anyway and kill me in the end.

“How can you say to me, ‘Flee like a bird to the mountains’; for look, the wicked bend the bow, they have fitted their arrow to the string, to shoot in the dark at the upright in heart. If the foundations are destroyed, what can the righteous do?”

If I flee like a bird, they will use an arrow and shot me down. If I flee like a lion, they will use a gun and shot me. The wicked have every means to block me and kill me because they are basically stronger than I am. I need someone else who can protect me. This is a realistic evaluation of the psalmist of the current situation.

So, she decided to flee into the hands of God. “The Lord is in his holy temple; the Lord’s throne is in heaven. His eyes behold, his gaze examines humankind. The Lord tests the righteous and the wicked, and his soul hates the lover of violence. On the wicked he will rain coals of fire and sulfur; a scorching wind shall be the portion of their cup. For the Lord is righteous; he loves righteous deeds; the upright shall behold his face.”

Even though the LORD is in heaven, God watches over and examines hearts of all human beings. God judges fairly. God will save the innocent and punish the wicked. So the strongest defense plan is to be on God’s side. We do not have to ask God to be on our side. When we are on God’s side, God and we are already one.
